Alain de Janvry was educated in Paris (agronomy and economics) and the University of California at Berkeley (MA in statistics and Ph.D. in agricultural economics). He developed his professional career as a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. He served as a Ford Foundation project specialist and/or advisor in Argentina (3 years), Chile (1 year), and Colombia (6 months).
