Your CIAT Research Online, April 2016

Dear All,

The Data and Information Services team is sharing with you the latest CIAT Research Online Newsletter.  This newsletter includes all the 2016 research outputs submitted since our last newsletter. Congratulations to all for your publications and other research outputs. Please see some key highlights below:
  • For the year 2016, we have 48 peer-reviewed journal articles, 45 of these were published in ISI indexed journals. This is 15 articles more (45%) than CIAT had published by 15 April last year.
  • We have 8 datasets published so far in 2016, this is an increase of 6 datasets from the same period last year.
  • Only 10% of our peer reviewed journal articles have published the replication data that underlies the publication.  Publishing primary data used in your publication enhances the reproducibility of work and is increasingly becoming a requirement for some journals.
  • Seven (7) of CIAT 2016 publications have an Altmetric score greater than 25, which puts them in the in the top 5% of all research outputs scored by Altmetric. CIAT uses the Altmetric scores to measure the attention publications are receiving in online news, social and scientific media. Since this is a measure of attention, read this article that puts the scores in context.
Notable CIAT Tool: Selection of Forages for the Tropics "SoFT" is an enormously popular tool. It was developed between 2000-2005 in response to a problem: some of the best minds in forages research wanted to retire! SoFT provides detailed information on 170 forage species, combining formal research with grey literature, photos, a glossary of terms, and decades of tacit knowledge from top forages researchers. It receives over 25,000 unique visitors monthly. Pretty impressive! Visit our blog for more details.

Over the coming months, the Data and Information Services team will be highlighting notable tools on our blog. A collection of CIAT Tools can be found in CIAT Research Online. Try searching by keyword or CIAT Subject.

Sincerely on behalf of the entire team,

Leroy Mwanzia

CIAT assesses the impact of your work through a tool called Altmetrics. Altmetrics are an alternative to traditional citation metrics. They measure the online attention and reach of research outputs through digital communication such as news stories, blogposts, Tweets, and storage in resources such as Mendeley and CiteULike.
